Causal Relationship in History: A Review

ઇતિહાસમાં કાર્યકારણ સબંધ : એક સમીક્ષા

Abstract

If any event happens, there must be some specific reason behind it. e.g. For example, if milk is heated in a pan, it boils. This may be due to the boiling property of milk. This is true but it does not clarify. Similarly, one can read or write about past events without knowing why they happened. It is true to say that World War II happened because Hitler wanted war. But it does not provide any sufficient explanation. One who speaks in this way should not make the mistake of calling himself a student of history or a historian. The study of history is the study of causes. According to E.H.Carr, “The historian constantly asks the question 'why' and will not stop until he gets the answer. Why is the thinker concerned with new objects or new contexts? asks such a question.''

Abstract in Gujarati Language:

કોઈ પણ ઘટના બને છે તો તેની પાછળ કોઈના કોઈ ચોક્કસ કારણ પણ કારણો જવાબદાર હોય જ છે. ઉ.દા. તરીકે દૂધને તપેલીમાં ગરમ કરવા મૂકીએ તો ઉકળે છે. આમ થવાનું કારણ કદાચ દૂધમાં ઉકળવાનો ગુણધર્મ હોઈ શકે. આ વાત સાચી છે પણ તેનાથી સ્પષ્ટતા મળતી નથી. એવી જ રીતે ભૂતકાળના બનાવો શા માટે બન્યા તે જાણ્યા સિવાય કોઈ પણ વ્યક્તિ તેના વિશે વાંચી કે લખી શકે. હિટલરને યુધ્ધ જોઈતું હતું માટે બીજુ વિશ્વયુધ્ધ થયું તેમ કહેવાથી સંતોષ થાય તે વાત સાચી છે. પણ તેનાથી કાંઈ પુરતો ખુલાસો મળતો નથી. આ રીતે વાત કરનારે પોતાની જાતને ઇતિહાસનો વિદ્યાર્થી અથવા ઈતિહાસકાર તરીકે ઓળખાવવાની ભૂલ કરવી નહિ. ઈતિહાસનો અભ્યાસ કારણોનો અભ્યાસ છે. ઈ.એચ.કાર ના મતે, “ઈતિહાસકાર ‘શા માટે’ એવો પ્રશ્ન સતત પૂછ્યા કરે છે અને જવાબ ન મળે ત્યાંસુધી તેને ચેન પડશે નહિ. ચિંતક નવી વસ્તુઓ અથવા નવા સંદર્ભની બાબતમાં શા માટે ? તેવો પ્રશ્ન પૂછે છે.’”
