From Ancient Civilizations to Contemporary Rivalry: The Historical Journey of India-China Relations

Abstract

India and China are among the oldest civilizations whose historical trajectories have not only shaped Asian geopolitics but also influenced global discourses. This research paper presents an analytical study of the long-standing historical journey of India-China relations, encompassing events from ancient cultural and social proximity to modern political and geopolitical rivalry. The relationship began with the spread of Buddhism from ancient India to China, the arrival of Chinese pilgrims to India, and active trade routes between the two countries. However, during the medieval period, political instability slowed these interactions. In the colonial era, British policies imposed artificial boundaries between the two nations, which later culminated in the 1962 war after their independence. In the latter half of the 20th century, both countries attempted economic cooperation and participation on multilateral platforms. Nevertheless, border disputes, military clashes, and geopolitical strategies—particularly in the context of incidents like Doklam and Galwan—have continued to destabilize this bilateral relationship. This study also highlights that mutual trust, dialogue, and strategic balance are essential foundations for establishing stable bilateral relations in the future.

Abstract in Hindi Language: भारत और चीन दो प्राचीनतम सभ्यताएँ हैं, जिनकी ऐतिहासिक यात्रा ने न केवल एशियाई भू-राजनीति को आकार दिया है, बल्कि वैश्विक विमर्शों को भी प्रभावित किया है। यह शोध-पत्र भारत-चीन संबंधों की दीर्घकालिक ऐतिहासिक यात्रा का विश्लेषणात्मक अध्ययन प्रस्तुत करता है, जिसमें प्राचीन काल की सांस्कृतिक-सामाजिक निकटता से लेकर आधुनिक काल की राजनीतिक एवं भू-रणनीतिक प्रतिद्वंद्विता तक की घटनाओं को समाहित किया गया है। प्राचीन भारत से चीन तक बौद्ध धर्म का विस्तार, चीनी यात्रियों का भारत आगमन, और दोनों देशों के मध्य व्यापारिक मार्गों की सक्रियता से प्रारंभ हुआ यह संबंध मध्यकाल में राजनीतिक अस्थिरताओं के कारण धीमा पड़ा। औपनिवेशिक काल में ब्रिटिश नीतियों ने दोनों देशों के मध्य कृत्रिम सीमाएँ खींच दीं, जिनका दुष्परिणाम स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के पश्चात 1962 के युद्ध के रूप में सामने आया। बीसवीं शताब्दी के उत्तरार्द्ध में जहाँ दोनों देशों ने आर्थिक सहयोग और बहुपक्षीय मंचों पर सहभागिता का प्रयास किया, वहीं सीमाविवाद, सैन्य टकराव और भू-राजनीतिक रणनीतियाँ, विशेषकर डोकलाम और गलवान जैसी घटनाओं के संदर्भ में, इस द्विपक्षीय संबंध को अस्थिर बनाती रही हैं। इस शोध के माध्यम से यह भी स्पष्ट किया गया है कि परस्पर विश्वास, संवाद और रणनीतिक संतुलन ही भविष्य में स्थायी द्विपक्षीय संबंधों की आधारशिला बन सकते हैं।
