Abstract

India interacts with other countries in multilateral forums, like the UN, and drives discussions on disarmament. They were one of the first countries to propose nuclear disarmament, a test ban treaty, and a freeze on the production of fissile material. India has been committed to the goal of global, inclusive, and non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament for a long time now. They also share the same objective of reducing the chance that weapons will spread to other nations. When India gained its independence in 1947, the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, pursued disarmament and delegitimizing nuclear weapons. He saw them as an "evil thing". For Nehru, banning tests was not an end to the nuclear age but a stepping-stone to broader forms of restraint. India has a long history of working towards disarmament, so he believed it would play a big role in leading the world in that same direction.
