The Developmental Trajectory of Hindi Criticism: From Classical Foundations to Modern Discourses

हिंदी आलोचना का विकास-क्रम: शास्त्रीय आधार से आधुनिक विमर्श तक

Abstract

The foundation of Hindi literary criticism lies in ancient Indian poetics, where scholars such as Bharatmuni, Anandavardhana, and Mammata established strong theoretical frameworks through concepts like Rasa (aesthetic emotion), Dhvani (suggestion), Riti (style), and Alankara (figures of speech). These principles provided a solid basis for evaluating literature. In medieval Hindi literature, the nature of criticism remained relatively indirect, interpretative, and experience-based. In Bhakti literature, works were assessed on the basis of spiritual sensitivity, while in the Ritikal period, evaluation was guided by classical aesthetic principles. Although criticism did not fully evolve as an independent discipline during this phase, it certainly laid its groundwork. In the modern period, Hindi criticism emerged as an independent, systematic, and scientific discipline. Beginning with the Bharatendu era and progressing into the Dwivedi era, criticism adopted moral, utilitarian, and socially oriented perspectives. During the Chhayavad and post-Chhayavad phases, aesthetic, psychological, and individualistic tendencies became prominent. Subsequently, Marxist, Progressive, and Experimental criticism introduced perspectives that viewed literature in terms of class struggle, realism, and social transformation. In contemporary times, Hindi criticism has embraced new discourses, making its scope broader, more inclusive, and multicultural.

Abstract in Hindi Language: हिंदी आलोचना की बुनियाद प्राचीन भारतीय काव्यशास्त्र में निहित है, जहाँ भरतमुनि, आनंदवर्धन, मम्मट आदि आचार्यों द्वारा प्रतिपादित रस, ध्वनि, रीति एवं अलंकार सिद्धांतों ने साहित्य के मूल्यांकन के लिए एक सुदृढ़ सैद्धांतिक आधार प्रदान किया। मध्यकालीन हिंदी साहित्य में आलोचना का स्वरूप अपेक्षाकृत अप्रत्यक्ष, व्याख्यात्मक एवं अनुभवपरक रहा, जहाँ भक्ति साहित्य में आध्यात्मिक संवेदना और रीतिकाल में काव्य-शास्त्रीय सौंदर्यबोध के आधार पर रचनाओं का मूल्यांकन किया गया। इस चरण में आलोचना एक स्वतंत्र विधा के रूप में पूर्णतः विकसित नहीं हो पाई, किंतु उसकी आधारभूमि अवश्य तैयार हो गई। आधुनिक काल में हिंदी आलोचना ने एक स्वतंत्र, व्यवस्थित और वैज्ञानिक विधा के रूप में अपनी सशक्त पहचान स्थापित की। भारतेंदु युग से प्रारंभ होकर द्विवेदी युग में आलोचना ने नैतिकता, उपयोगिता और समाजोन्मुख दृष्टिकोण को अपनाया, जबकि छायावाद और उत्तर-छायावाद के दौर में सौंदर्यवादी, मनोवैज्ञानिक एवं व्यक्तिवादी प्रवृत्तियाँ उभरकर सामने आईं। आगे चलकर मार्क्सवादी, प्रगतिवादी और प्रयोगवादी आलोचना ने साहित्य को वर्ग-संघर्ष, यथार्थवाद और सामाजिक परिवर्तन के संदर्भ में देखने की दृष्टि प्रदान की। समकालीन समय में हिंदी आलोचना ने नवीन विमर्शों को आत्मसात करते हुए अपने क्षेत्र को और अधिक व्यापक, समावेशी तथा बहुसांस्कृतिक बना लिया है।
