India is a fast-growing economy with a large population evenly distributed across all age categories. Recent studies show the fast-growing usage of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for most mundane financial transactions. Easy availability of money and technology, along with growing retailing, has enabled many UPI players to enter the Indian sub-continent. This study attempts to analyse the role of senior citizens' usage of UPI in India’s transition towards a cashless economy. This study is ethnography in nature, as the respondents are elderly citizens and would resist disclosing their financial behaviour. The demographic profile is analysed thematically. The themes included demography, economical and value & trust. The age of the respondents and their emotional reaction were analysed using chi-square. The result showed no association between the two variables, with a score of 0.057. The study proposes subsidies in service taxes on the use of UPI for senior citizens, customisation on the usage of UPI, designing smartphones to facilitate the needs of senior citizens, awareness on the procedures for lodging complaints with cybersecurity and providing dedicated cybersecurity helplines to senior citizens.
