Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a transformative milestone in India's educational landscape by advocating a holistic, multidisciplinary, and research-oriented approach to learning. One of its distinguishing features is the integration of India's rich traditional knowledge systems with contemporary scientific research and innovation. Traditional knowledge, encompassing disciplines such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Vedic Mathematics, astronomy, agriculture, metallurgy, philosophy, linguistics, and environmental conservation, has significantly contributed to the intellectual heritage of humanity. However, globalization, modernization, and colonial educational practices led to the gradual marginalization of indigenous knowledge systems within mainstream academia. NEP 2020 seeks to restore this balance by encouraging evidence-based integration of traditional wisdom into modern education and research. This chapter critically examines the conceptual framework of NEP 2020 concerning Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), highlighting its role in higher education reforms, multidisciplinary education, curriculum innovation, skill development, research ethics, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. The study adopts a qualitative research approach based on policy analysis, literature review, and secondary data from government reports, academic publications, and institutional documents. The chapter argues that integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific inquiry promotes innovation, cultural preservation, ethical values, environmental sustainability, and national development. It further identifies implementation challenges such as curriculum restructuring, faculty preparedness, research funding, scientific validation, and institutional collaboration. Finally, recommendations are offered for strengthening the integration of traditional knowledge within India's higher education ecosystem while maintaining international standards of academic excellence and scientific rigor.
