Abstract

Digital payment systems have emerged as a significant catalyst for financial inclusion, business formalization, and sustainable economic growth in developing economies. Their growing adoption has transformed the operational and financial landscape of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) by improving transaction efficiency, expanding market access, and strengthening financial transparency. This study examines the influence of digital payment adoption on revenue generation among MSEs operating within the unique dual economic structure of Kachchh district, Gujarat, where modern industrial clusters coexist with traditional rural and semi-urban enterprises. Drawing upon secondary data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), Government of Gujarat publications, MSME reports, and contemporary academic literature, the study adopts a descriptive and analytical research approach to evaluate the financial implications of digital payment systems. The findings indicate that digital payment adoption contributes to enhanced sales performance, improved cash flow management, stronger customer engagement, and greater access to formal financial services. Digital transaction records also facilitate creditworthiness, thereby improving opportunities for institutional finance among small enterprises. Nevertheless, the benefits are not uniformly distributed across the district. Constraints such as inadequate digital infrastructure, cybersecurity concerns, limited digital literacy, and apprehensions regarding tax compliance continue to impede widespread adoption, particularly among enterprises operating in the informal sector. The study concludes that while digital payments serve as an important driver of revenue generation and enterprise formalization, region-specific policy interventions are essential to bridge the digital divide within Kachchh's heterogeneous economy. Strengthening digital infrastructure, enhancing financial literacy, and promoting secure and affordable digital payment ecosystems can significantly improve the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of MSEs. The findings provide practical insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and development agencies seeking to accelerate inclusive economic growth through digital financial transformation.
