The Spread of Fake News and Misinformation in the Digital Social Media Era

The rapid expansion of social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp has fundamentally altered the manner in which information is produced, circulated and consumed across the globe. While these platforms have democratised access to information and given ordinary citizens a voice that traditional gatekeepers once controlled, the same openness has created fertile ground for the rapid and often uncontrolled spread of fake news, rumours and misinformation. This article examines the phenomenon of fake news and misinformation in the digital social media era, tracing its historical roots, the technological and psychological factors that accelerate its diffusion, and its consequences for individuals, institutions and democratic processes. Drawing upon a review of existing academic literature and a structured primary survey of social media users, the study explores patterns of exposure to false information, the ability of users to distinguish credible content from fabricated content, and the coping mechanisms adopted by individuals and platforms to counter this menace. The findings indicate that emotionally charged and sensational content spreads considerably faster than verified factual reporting, that younger users rely heavily on social media as a primary news source despite low verification habits, and that algorithmic amplification, confirmation bias and low digital literacy are the principal drivers of misinformation diffusion. The article concludes with a set of policy, educational and technological recommendations aimed at strengthening media literacy, encouraging platform accountability and promoting responsible information sharing behaviour among users.
