Tourism in Assam is a vital sector contributing significantly to income generation, employment, and socio-economic development. The state’s diverse natural landscapes, including wildlife sanctuaries, tea gardens, the Brahmaputra River, and cultural festivals, provide unique opportunities for specialized tourism such as wildlife, tea, eco-, and spiritual tourism. Tourism creates both direct and indirect employment by generating jobs in hospitality, transport, tour operations, and guiding services, while simultaneously supporting livelihoods in handicrafts, agriculture, and local businesses. For instance, one million rupees invested in tourism can generate nearly 48 direct jobs, and each domestic tourist supports approximately three jobs, with foreign tourists supporting up to seven, illustrating the sector’s substantial employment potential. Tourism also contributes directly to state revenue through taxes and entrance fees and indirectly through stimulating related sectors via backward and forward linkages. Data from 2019–2023 indicate a consistent rise in tourist arrivals, with domestic tourists exceeding 9.8 million in 2022–23, generating over ₹2.64 crore in revenue and contributing approximately 5.5% to Assam’s GDP while providing 10.5% of total employment. Government initiatives such as the Tourism Policy 2017 and Assam Tourism Policy 2022 have enhanced infrastructure, marketing, safety, and community engagement, further promoting sustainable tourism and rural development. Despite these positive trends, challenges including inadequate infrastructure, limited investment, shortage of trained personnel, and insufficient public-private coordination hinder the sector from fully realizing its potential. Strengthening these areas can enable Assam to maximize tourism’s economic, social, and cultural benefits, positioning it as a key driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
