Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional stage of life during which physical, mental, emotional, and social changes occur at a very rapid pace. At this stage, proper and balanced nutrition not only affects the current health of adolescent girls but also has long-term effects on their future motherhood, reproductive health, and overall quality of life. In a developing country like India, where adolescent girls are often deprived of nutritious diets due to gender inequality and socio-cultural beliefs, this issue becomes even more significant. The present study was conducted to analyse nutritional awareness and daily health behaviour among adolescent girls from rural and urban areas from the perspective of Home Science. A Descriptive Survey Method was employed, and a total of 150 adolescent girls aged 13 to 19 years were selected through the stratified random sampling method. Primary data were collected using a self-constructed structured questionnaire and an interview schedule. The findings revealed that although most adolescent girls had general knowledge about the importance of a balanced diet, vitamins, and minerals, irregular dietary habits, an increasing preference for fast food, the habit of skipping breakfast, and indifference towards iron- and calcium-rich foods were clearly observed at the practical level. A significant relationship was found between the nutritional awareness of adolescent girls and factors such as their mother’s education, family income, and place of residence (rural/urban). The findings of the study highlight the immediate need for Home Science education at the school level, structured nutrition education programmes, and community awareness campaigns to transform nutritional awareness into practical health behaviour among adolescent girls.

Abstract in Hindi Language:
